As every morning, Mr. Finch woke up in his straw loft, the golden light of the autumn caressed his old soft skin, warming his body and his soul. How many years did he take care of that sanctuary? He could not remember, but his love for those little birds was as strong as the first day, in fact they were his family.
Mr. Finch studied all the books about birds he could afford along the years, reaching such perfect knowledge and understanding he knows what his friends need with just a look: If the Twitreds want to hear a tale before sleep, or if the Greys prefer the taste of other seeds. Each cage belongs to a family and he is the guardian of their happiness. He didn’t pay attention to his neighbours comments, that place was his world, his nest the best bed and his birds the best friends. He felt like one of them, and that was simply wonderful!
Nothing could interrupt the peace of that morning, everything was perfect and he even finished knitting the little blue sweater; the woollen and the pearls still remain over the nest and he thought it would be the perfect decoration for his baby bird.
Oh! Did I forget to mention?Mr. Finch is pregnant. Or that’s what he truly believes. He can feel the movements inside his belly and the hope in his heart.
Who could have imagined? After all these years, he will have his own little chick. Mr. Finch wondered if the baby will allow him to teach him everything he knows, he hardly tried it with some of the birds but noone seemed interested. And look at them now! Their little bright eyes fixed in his belly with increasing curiosity, or are they looking to his happy face? Do they think his behaviour is strange or can they feel the hope in the air?
Because Mr. Finch’ pregnancy contains desire and possibility.
Nothing more exist for him but his Past and the smiling Future awaiting him, pregnant with the promise of freedom and joy.
The Ode of Hope... All is ready, the label with the words “The Finchs” hangs from the nest and the Birday is marked in the calendar. “Nothing is impossible” he thinks unaware that tons of eyes, yours and mine, spying him from the darkness.
